Scanner FAQ's
Updated: Mar 28, 2022
Buying an intraoral scanner is a big investment for any practice. The AORALSCAN from Osseo Group is a fully-functional intraoral scanner, designed to offer practices an affordable, doctor-friendly, and fast way to send cases to an off-site laboratory. We've answered some of our most frequently asked questions below. If you've got a question that's not answered, you can call us at 1300 029 383 or send us an email at support@osseogroup.com.au and one of our product specialists will get back to you.
Can I use AORALSCAN for ClearCorrect?
Yes! The scanner works perfectly with ClearCorrect. It will save you time and money! When it comes to submitting your case, just select STL files and drag and drop them from the patient folder into ClearComm.
Your account rep will help you the first time around.
Can I use AORALSCAN for Invisalign?
No. Align only accepts scans from iTero, CEREC and TRIOS in some regions.
Can I use AORALSCAN with a chair-side mill?
Yes, as long as your chair-side milling system and software accept STL files.
Can I send scans from AORALSCAN to my lab?
Give your lab a call – if they can accept STL files, they can accept scans from AORALSCAN without additional licences or fees. If you're unsure of what to ask, email our office at support@osseogroup.com.au with your labs details and we'll ask on your behalf.
Does my lab need a licence to receive scans?
No, they can download scans for free without the need for software or licences.
How quickly can I scan an orthodontic case?
After a little practice, you'll be able to scan orthodontic cases in 3 minutes or less.
How quickly can I scan a quadrant crown case?
After a little practice, you'll be able to scan a typical crown case in 2 minutes or less.
Will the AORALSCAN work with my implant system?
Yes, the scanner works with every implant system. Most people don't realise, but the scanner doesn't actually care or know about the implant system at all, it just records the shape and position of the scan abutment and your lab's design software takes care of the rest.
If you don't already have scan abutments, you'll need to order these from your implant company. They'll know exactly what you're asking for.
Can I use AORALSCAN for dentures?
Yes and no... Will it scan? YES. Will there be tissue compression to allow the denture to be comfortable and fit well? NO, that's impossible to do with light and cameras.
BUT there is a compromise where it can be used for partial cases with tooth-supported bound saddles, because a mucostatic impression is preferred.
As for full dentures and Kennedy class 1 & 2 partials - there is no way for the scanner to take a mucocompressive scan.
You could take a PVS, pour it and scan that to allow for tissue compression but you may as well just sent the impression to your lab at that stage.
Can I use AORALSCAN to make retainers and mouthguards?
You sure can! You'll need one of our add-on printers but all the software to base a model and embed the patient's name is built into the scanning software.
How much does the scanner weigh?
The AORALSCAN weighs 240g.
What's the scan depth and area?
The scanner can capture an area 12x16mm up to 22mm from the scanner tip. This means you'll be able to capture margins and implant abutments in hard to reach posterior regions.
What's the annual fee?
$0 - We don't have annual fees, nor do we charge for software upgrades.
What's included when I order a scanner?
Each scanner order includes the following items:

Can I use my own laptop?
Yes, BUT we'll still be providing you with the correct laptop as part of the package.
Understandably we can only guarantee reliability on the packaged laptop and we'll be unable to provide support unless the scanner is being used on this laptop.
How big is the internal hard drive?
The internal drive is a solid-state 1tb drive capable of holding close to 10,000 patient scans. If you manage to go over this, you can bail them off to a removable hard drive or ask your IT people to set up a network drive.
Why don't you use Alienware?
Alienware is a brand of Dell gaming laptops. Our laptop is a Dell workstation spec'd to support the scanner with ample room to allow for new software upgrades and features.
Do you really need a chunky, yet fancy case, RGB keyboard, immersive sound quality and the price tag to go with it? Probably not.
Can I upgrade the laptop you supply?
No. The laptop supplied is a Dell workstation spec'd to support the scanner with ample room to allow for new software upgrades and features.
There is no need to go overboard and drive up the cost of something that is more than capable of doing its job for years to come.
Can I use the laptop for other things?
There is nothing to stop you using the laptop for whatever you like BUT it's best to keep it for use by the scanner only.
It will be difficult for us to support you if there is other software which clashes internally with the Shining 3D software.
